Heirloom tomatoes are a fascinating lot. There are hundreds from which to choose. They come in all shapes and sizes, colors and flavors. They defy the perfection of the consistent, round, red commercial tomato with multi-lobed fruit that range from purples, mahogany and greens to bi-color yellow and pink; their flavors smokey and tart to the sweetness of melon. We hope you will enjoy the adventure.
Heirloom tomatoes are, by nature, fragile inside and out. For this reason they are picked slightly under ripe in order to reduce bruising and splitting of the skin. Place tomatoes on the kitchen counter, stem end down. NEVER refrigerate your tomatoes. When gently squeezed, a ripe heirloom will feel the same as when squeezing your relaxed forearm.
We will offer over 50 varieties of heirloom tomatoes this summer. The majority begin ripening in earnest in late July to August. Come visit us at the farm or at the Farmers’ Market in Excelsior to experience the wonder. Special orders taken for August and September. |
